Understanding the Three Main Functions of Your HVAC System
Heating
Achieved through a furnace, heating involves distributing warm air ducts to increase the indoor temperature throughout the home. A furnace serves as the primary heating element by generating warm air to heat your home. It can operate on gas, electricity, or a hybrid of energy sources.
Another option would be the heat pump which functions as part of the heating system by extracting heat from the outdoor air or ground to warm your home.
Ventilation
Ventilation can be either natural or forced. Forced ventilation not only circulates air but also purifies it, removing contaminants and ensuring a constant supply of fresh air. An air handler plays a key role in ventilation by circulating air throughout your home. It ensures that air moves efficiently through the ducts, supporting both heating and cooling operations. Indoor air quality products contribute to ventilation by filtering out contaminants from the air, thus improving the overall air quality. This includes air filtration systems that remove particles and allergens and humidity control devices that manage moisture levels, which are essential for a healthy indoor environment.
Air Conditioning
The AC unit cools your home by removing indoor heat and replacing it with cooler air, essential for comfort during warmer months. A heat pump can be integral to the cooling of a home as well by extracting heat from inside your home and releasing it outdoors, thereby cooling the interior space.
A ductless unit provides cooling (and heating) directly to specific areas without the need for traditional ductwork. It’s particularly useful for adding air conditioning to spaces that cannot accommodate ducts.
Thermostats are crucial for controlling the operation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. They allow for the setting and maintenance of desired temperatures throughout the home and can manage multiple zones independently.

What is a Napoleon Hybrid Heating Solution?
The Napoleon Hybrid Heating Solution ingeniously merges the best of both worlds: the eco-friendly efficiency of a cold climate air source heat pump with the robust warmth of a furnace, capable of running on electricity or an alternative fuel like natural gas or propane. At the heart of this system is the smart EQHub Thermostat, which lets you dial in your heating preferences—whether you’re after comfort, savings, quiet operation, or cutting emissions—right from the EQHub or the Napoleon Home app on your smartphone. This setup shines with its dual switch technology, smartly flipping between electric heating with the heat pump and fuel-based heating with the furnace based on what’s cheaper or more efficient at the moment, considering factors like energy prices, the time of day, outside temperature, and your home’s heating needs. Plus, with the Napoleon Home app, you get to see exactly how much you’re saving with a personalized monthly report, making this hybrid system a smart, flexible, and user-friendly way to keep your home cozy without breaking the bank or the planet.
What Are Energy Ratings?
Energy ratings are a standardized measure of the energy efficiency of various products, including heating and cooling systems, electronics, and even buildings. These ratings help consumers understand how much energy a product uses and compare the energy efficiency of different models.
Energy Star Rating
The Energy Star logo signifies more than just energy efficiency. When you see a Napoleon Heating and Cooling product adorned with the Energy Star badge, it means the product has met the stringent energy efficiency criteria set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Products that earn this rating are among the most efficient on the market, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and offering significant savings on energy bills without sacrificing performance.
Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE)
The AFUE rating quantifies how efficiently a furnace converts fuel into heat over a typical year. Essentially, it tells you how much of your fuel is being used to warm your home versus the amount lost in the conversion process. The higher the AFUE percentage, the more efficient the furnace.
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER)
SEER measures the efficiency of your air conditioning unit or heat pump. It calculates the cooling output over a typical cooling season and divides it by the total electric energy input during the same period. A higher SEER rating means the system is more efficient, using less electricity to cool your home.
Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF)
Similar to SEER, the HSPF rating is specific to the heating efficiency of heat pumps. It represents the total heat output of the heating season divided by the electricity used. A higher HSPF rating indicates a more efficient heat pump, meaning it uses less electricity to produce the same amount of heat.
Napoleon products are designed with a strong emphasis on surpassing energy efficiency benchmarks, aiming to excel in energy ratings across their range. By incorporating advanced technology and innovative design, Napoleon seeks to ensure that their heating and cooling solutions not only meet but exceed the stringent criteria set by energy rating systems.
